 Richard ArmourDr Richard Armour has 27 years experience in HE administration. He is currently the Senior Adviser at Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST). Previously he had been Registrar of the Open University of Hong Kong, following a period as Director of Academic Planning at the City University of Hong Kong. He was also Director and Principal Investigator for a large-scale project evaluating student experience in the region. Before going to Hong Kong in 1992, Richard worked in administrative posts in Queen Margaret University College and the University of Strathclyde.


 Smita JamdarSmita Jamdar is lead partner for all Martineau's university clients. She maintains an overview of the firm's work undertaken for them and heads the specialist education team.
Her own work includes specialist education advice for HE including disputes between institutions and their collaborative partners both in the UK and overseas, human rights challenges to the decisions of public bodies, student claims based on breach of contract, discrimination and negligence, as well as judicial review. She provides advocacy and representation for institutions in internal student disciplinary and complaints hearings. Smita also advises on health & safety matters, including dealing with and attending interviews of staff under caution by the Health & Safety Executive. Smita qualified as a lawyer at Martineau in January 1996.

 Lawrie PhippsLawrie Phipps is a Programme Manager with JISC, the Joint Information Systems Committee. His current portfolio includes approximately 45 projects covering a range of issues in higher education including green issues, learning and teaching, research and administration. He also manages a series of projects that have looked at the use of social networking and web 2.0 tools and how they can be exploited for education.


 Geraldine SwantonGeraldine Swanton advises on all aspects of the university-student contract including the application of consumer protection, human rights legislation, together with student complaints and disputes. She also advises on student discipline, equality and constitutional matters, and on the increasingly significant areas of data protection and freedom of information. Geraldine qualified as a lawyer at Martineau in September 1999.

 Stuart WardStuart Ward has been a Director of the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council since 1999, with responsibility for human, financial, operational and performance management.

He has been involved in the RCUK Shared Services Centre since the project originated and currently is Deputy SRO.Mr Ward has been involved in the development and implementation of full economic costing for research and was a member of the two recent RCUK reviews of fEC.


James WilsdonJames Wilsdon became Director of the Science Policy Centre at the Royal Society in September 2008, and coordinates the Society's UK and international policy work. From 2001 to 2008, James worked at the think tank Demos, first as Head of Strategy, then as Head of Science and Innovation. He was also Director of 'The Atlas of Ideas' project, which explored the changing geography of science and innovation in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. He has researched and published widely on science and innovation policy, sustainable development, emerging technologies and the globalisation of research.

From 1997 to 2001, he was Senior Policy Adviser at the sustainability charity Forum for the Future. He has a first-class degree in philosophy and theology from Oxford University and a doctorate in technology policy from Middlesex University. He is also an Honorary Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Studies at Lancaster University, a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts, a Trustee of People and Planet, and a member of the RCUK Advisory Panel on Public Engagement with Research.

James is an experienced public speaker and has written for a variety of publications, including The Financial Times, The Guardian, Times Higher Education, SEED, China Daily, OpenDemocracy and Green Futures.
