AI is rapidly becoming a strategic issue for governing bodies, creating new opportunities, risks and leadership challenges for higher education institutions. This interactive online session is designed for AHUA members, whose roles are to support governing bodies in providing effective strategic oversight and challenge.
Through expert input, facilitated discussion and peer exchange, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their institution's current position, share experiences with colleagues from across the sector, and identify practical next steps.
Participants leave with a reusable diagnostic, greater clarity on their own institution's strategic position and a concrete commitment made in front of peers.

Professor Sue Turner OBE

Sue Turner is dedicated to using her expertise in AI governance and ethics to inspire people and organisations to use AI with wisdom and integrity
With both a Law degree and an MSc in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, she established AI Governance Limited in 2020 to advise businesses and policy makers on pragmatic AI, data ethics and governance issues, and making a positive societal impact. Her Board development clients range from Fortune 100 and FTSE 350 businesses to small charities, and her reach is global through accredited training programmes and being a founder member of the United Nations AI Skills Coalition. She has been rated in the World's Top 100 Women in AI Ethics and was one of the first 14 people globally to be accredited in the Foundations of Independent Audit of AI systems.
She is Professor in Practice for AI and Technologies at the University of Bristol Business School, Board Chair and Non-Executive Director for purpose-driven businesses in regulated industries and has been a Mentor on the Turing Institute’s Skills Policy Awards. Her career spans entrepreneurial private businesses and not-for-profit organisations where she has led significant organisational growth, raised £27 million for charity and collaborated to shift power to help people improve their prospects. She was awarded the OBE in 2021 for Services to Social Justice.
Graham Abbey

Graham is a Professor in Practice at the University of Bristol Business School and Director of the Centre for Purposeful Leadership. He also teaches leadership and organizational change.
Graham is the Founder and Chief Executive of Farleigh Performance. Formed in 2020 as a joint venture with leading professional sports organisation, Bath Rugby, Farleigh Performance works with diverse organisations – sporting to commercial; large to small; local to global; public, private and charitable – to bring purposeful performance to life.
Graham’s desire to understand how things work has stuck with him ever since his Engineering studies. This has drawn him into exploring human-systems, specifically how to create high performing, purposeful businesses. He has worked internationally as a Management Consultant, Human Resources Director (easyJet), Charity Trustee (Refugee Council) and Business Academic (University of Bath), and was one of the world’s first Chief Purpose Officers for Tate & Lyle Plc.
Along with his first-class Engineering degree from the University of Bristol, Graham has added a Psychology degree and an MBA to his qualifications. His PhD research examined storytelling during organisational change, and he believes now is the time to be rewriting the role of all organisations in society as we grapple with increasing challenges and opportunities.
