Conflict on Campus: An external event organised by Simon Fanshawe OBE, Professor Gale Macleod and Professor Jonathan Hearn. 

The event will bring together university leaders and others from across the Scottish HE sector to spend time together discussing the underlying principles that can help us in Higher Education in Scotland to deal effectively and positively with conflicts on campus – both in the context of teaching and research and in the public sphere. 

The outline of the day is to spend the morning networking and hearing from various people with experience of dealing with conflict on campus across a range of topics (e.g. pro- Palestinian encampments,  enquiries into antisemitism on campus); experts in the legal and statutory requirements regarding free speech and academic freedom; and academics with different perspectives on the limits to FS/AF.  In the afternoon there will be facilitated discussion groups and a plenary session.

Organisers have explicitly drawn together a very wide range of views on the purpose of a university, the role of protest and legitimate restrictions on academic freedom and freedom of speech. This will facilitate a broad discussion about how different individuals and groups approach the issues of conflicts and clashes on campus - both inside and outside the classroom
