AHUA Membership Exchange: Supporting Effective Student Governors

In this free, online, member-led, members-only meeting, Sophie Bowen, Chief Student Officer at UEL and an AHUA Board member, will lead a discussion focusing on how university governance can support the effective contribution of student governors and how boards can capture the student voice beyond the perspectives of student governors.
The revised CUC Code of Governance reasserts the role of student governors and stresses that "rather than representatives, their presence must not be considered sufficient to act as broader engagement with these critical stakeholder groups." In that context, this small-group discussion, held under the Chatham House Rule, will provide an opportunity for members to share their experiences, concerns and creative ideas about supporting the effective contribution of student governors and, separately, helping boards reflect on student engagement more broadly.
Sophie Bowen
Sophie Bowen leads UEL’s student transformation programme, overseeing services from libraries to student unions. With 25+ years in HE, she’s held senior roles at Birmingham, St George’s, Middlesex, and served on AHUA and HESA boards. A first-generation graduate from Oxford, she holds an MBA and MPhil in Sociology. Sophie drives student experience strategy, equity, and operational excellence, ensuring UEL delivers a supportive and empowering environment for all learners.
