Members’ comments on their experiences of participating in an Action Learning Set

The opportunity to have a safe space where challenges can be shared with a group of peers was invaluable, especially in the current context.  The sessions were expertly guided by our coach and kept us focused but also supported throughout.  The Learning Set gave me an invaluable operational network of colleagues that I am confident I could reach out to for support or advice now or in the future..
Simon Williams, Director of Student Operations, St Mary’s University
Senior professional roles can be quite isolating. It can be really helpful to have an informal network of peers outside your institution to share problems with and say things to that it might be difficult to say within your own institution. .
Peter Garrod, University Secretary, University of Greenwich
The group was fabulous – I think we all engaged really well with each other and it was at times very therapeutic to learn that others were going through (or had been through) similar experiences. We were from all different types of institutions which helped to bring different perspectives. I’ve been able to approach them outside of the learning set too for advice, and feel like they are good colleagues to be in touch with in the future. .
Emma French, Chief Academic Services Officer and University Secretary, University of Salford
I found that being part of a learning set created the time and space to reflect, share experiences and learn, in a way that could never have been achieved in the midst of a hectic normal working day/life. The value of doing this with a small group of trusted colleagues cannot be underestimated. It has made me a better person – professionally and personally.
Patrick Hackett, Registrar, Secretary and Chief Operating Officer, University of Manchester
Meeting such delightful people through the learning set has helped me to see the real benefits of AHUA membership and enabled me to build a strong network. I have been able to draw on a range of professional experiences and backgrounds in discussing live issues with supportive and expert colleagues.
Louise Nadal, School Secretary, LSE
I wanted to say how much I have valued being a member of an AHUA learning set, and how incredibly helpful it has been to me. The network of colleagues it created has been supportive and informative and our convenor has been a skilled chair and powerful resource. The learning set meetings have contributed a great deal to my development in my current role and helping me prepare for my next one. Thank you to AHUA for hosting these services..
Andrew Boggs, University Secretary, Royal Holloway, University of London
