Covid-19 has tested our crisis management and business continuity plans to destruction. From early management of the pandemic in February, close-down of most campus operations at the end of March, a confirmation and clearing like no other and the complex planning for re-opening of campuses and student accommodation, the crisis has presented huge challenges to our plans, not least as we have tried to respond to changing national guidance. With plans changing so frequently, there is a risk that we don’t capture learning to improve our future resilience. This session will pin down the experiences of AHUA members in implementing learning from the crisis.  Panellists are:
  • Caroline Thomas, University Secretary, Leeds Beckett University
  • Ray Selby, Registrar, University of Wales, Trinity St David
  • Dr Robert Partridge, Executive Director of Student and Academic Services, University of Glasgow
Chris Scott OBE, R3S Global Co-founder & Alison Kennell, Specialist HE Associate will facilitate the event.  They both have extensive experience working with and in the HE sector across a wide range of universities.  Most recently, they have worked together to support Leeds Beckett’s crisis management journey. Chris’s experience, including involvement in the Government’s COBR decision-making machinery and global sporting events (London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games, 2014 Tour de France and 2017 World Athletics Championships), provides the basis for invaluable insights into high-stakes crisis management planning, which he has shared through working with a number of universities. Alison brings 25 years of experience in the HE sector, most recently in interim roles at Leeds Beckett and SOAS, and previously as University Secretary at York St John. About R3S Global: R3S Global is a management consultancy supporting HE clients in the areas of risk management, readiness and resilience. They support Boards and Senior Leadership Teams in delivering bespoke solutions to complex challenges. Their team has unique expertise in the strategic handling of crises and uses practical experience from a wide range of disruptive events, combined with an in-depth knowledge of managing such events in the HE sector, to support analysis of challenges and solutions.
